Seven Major Processes of PCB Design

This includes preparing component libraries and schematics. Before conducting PCB design, it is necessary to first prepare the schematic SCH component library and PCB component packaging library. The PCB component packaging library should preferably be established by engineers according to the standard size data of the selected components. In principle, first establish a component packaging library for PC, and then establish a schematic SCH component library.

1. Pre preparation;

This includes preparing component libraries and schematics. Before conducting PCB design, it is necessary to first prepare the schematic SCH component library and PCB component packaging library;

The PCB component packaging library should preferably be established by engineers according to the standard size data of the selected components. In principle, first establish a component packaging library for PC, and then establish a schematic SCH component library;

The packaging library for PCB components has high requirements, which directly affects the installation of PCBs; The requirements for the schematic SCH component library are relatively loose, but it is important to define the pin attributes and corresponding relationships with the PCB component packaging library;

2. PCB Structure Design;

Based on the determined circuit board size and various mechanical positioning, draw the PCB board frame in the PCB design environment, and place the required connectors, buttons/switches, screw holes, assembly holes, etc. according to the positioning requirements& Nbsp;

Fully consider and determine the wiring area and non wiring area (such as the extent of non wiring area around screw holes);

3. PCB Layout Design;

Layout design refers to placing devices within the PCB frame according to design requirements. Generate a network table (Design → Create Netlist) in the schematic tool, and then import the network table (Design → Import Netlist) in the PCB software. After successfully importing the network table, it will exist in the software background. Through the Placement operation, all devices can be called out, and there are flying wires between each pin to indicate connection. At this point, the device layout design can be carried out;

PCB layout design is the first important process in the entire PCB design process. The more complex the PCB board, the better the layout can directly affect the difficulty of later wiring implementation;

Layout design relies on the basic circuit skills and rich design experience of circuit board designers, which is a high-level requirement for circuit board designers. Junior circuit board designers have limited experience and are suitable for small module layout design or PCB layout design tasks with lower overall difficulty;

 4. PCB wiring design;

 PCB wiring design is the most labor-intensive process in the entire PCB design, directly affecting the performance of the PCB board;

 In the process of PCB design, there are generally three levels of wiring:;

Firstly, layout is the most basic entry-level requirement for PCB design& Nbsp;

Secondly, the satisfaction of electrical performance is the standard for measuring whether a PCB board is qualified. After the circuit is laid out, carefully adjust the wiring to achieve the best electrical performance

 Once again, it is neat and beautiful, with disorderly wiring. Even if the electrical performance passes the standard, it will bring great inconvenience to the optimization, testing, and maintenance of the later board modification. The wiring requirements are neat and uniform, and cannot be crisscrossed and disorderly;

5. Wiring optimization and screen printing placement;

PCB design is not the best, only the better. PCB design is a flawed art. This is mainly because PCB design needs to meet various hardware design requirements, and individual requirements may be conflicting and cannot be achieved simultaneously;

 For example, if a PCB design project needs to be designed as a 6-layer board after evaluation by the circuit board designer, but the product hardware must be designed as a 4-layer board due to cost considerations, the signal shielding layer can only be sacrificed, resulting in increased signal crosstalk between adjacent wiring layers and reduced signal quality;

 The general design experience is that optimizing wiring takes twice as long as the initial wiring. After the optimization of PCB wiring is completed, post-processing is required, with the primary focus on the silk screen identification of the PCB board surface. During design, the bottom layer silk screen characters need to be mirrored to avoid confusion with the top layer silk screen;

 6. Network DRC Check and Structure Check;

 Quality control is an important component of the PCB design process, and general quality control methods include: design self inspection, design mutual inspection, expert review meetings, special inspections, etc;

Schematic diagram and structural element diagram are the most basic design requirements, and network DRC inspection and structural inspection respectively confirm that the PCB design meets the two input conditions of schematic diagram network table and structural element diagram;

Generally, circuit board designers have their own accumulated design quality inspection checklists, where some of the items come from the company or department's specifications, while the other part comes from their own experience summary. The special inspection includes Valor inspection and DFM inspection of the design, which focus on PCB design output backend processing photo files;

 7. PCB board making;


Before the PCB is officially processed and produced, the circuit board designer needs to communicate with the PE of the PCB supplier factory to answer the manufacturer's confirmation questions about PCB processing;

This includes but is not limited to: selection of PCB board model, adjustment of line width and distance between circuit layers, adjustment of impedance control, adjustment of PCB stack thickness, surface treatment processing technology, aperture tolerance control and delivery standards, etc;
