High Temperature Buffer Pad Selection Guide: How to Balance Temperature, Pressure, and Insulation?
In manufacturing processes such as high-temperature bonding, hot press welding, module packaging, glass hot bending, and lithium battery forming, high-temperature buffer pads serve as a "transition layer" between equipment and workpieces, playing multiple roles such as insulation, cushioning, anti slip, and insulation. Although it is just a "gasket", its material, thickness, structure, and function directly affect product yield, tooling life, and even production line efficiency. Choosing the wrong one not only increases the scrap rate, but may also damage the equipment; Choosing the right one can achieve twice the result with half the effort.
Working temperature: the primary consideration for selection bottom line
As the name suggests, a high-temperature cushion should first be able to withstand high temperatures. But high temperature resistance ≠ the higher the better, but it needs to be adapted and matched with the actual process temperature.
We need to clarify two temperature concepts:
Continuous Operating Temperature: A temperature range that does not experience thermal aging or performance degradation during long-term use;
Peak Temperature: The maximum temperature that can be sustained in a short period of time, usually 10-20% higher than the sustained temperature.
Pressure bearing capacity: determines deformation, indentation, and buffering effect
In the hot pressing process, there is not only high temperature, but also the application of pressure (static or dynamic pressure). High temperature buffer pads must have good compression recovery and deformation resistance. If the gasket is too soft, it will stick unevenly and bear uneven force; If it is too hard, it will lose its buffering effect and instead crush the workpiece.
Key performance indicators include:
Compression Modulus: The ability of a material to resist compression;
Compression permanent deformation rate: whether the original thickness is restored after long-term compression;
Resilience: The speed and degree of shape recovery after pressure relief.
Insulation assessment: the 'safety bottom line' in electronic processes
In electronic processes such as chip packaging, BGA soldering, module hot pressing, and battery molding, electrical insulation performance is an essential selection factor that cannot be ignored, especially when the buffer pad is located between live components or heating platforms.
The gasket must withstand both high temperature and high voltage to prevent short circuit or arc breakdown.
Important parameters include: dielectric strength (kV/mm), volume resistivity (Ω· cm), surface resistance breakdown voltage.
In addition to temperature, pressure, and electrical performance, different industries also have requirements for the "additional performance" of cushioning pads:
Cleanliness, industries such as semiconductors, lithium batteries, and photovoltaic glass require materials to be dust-free, low volatile, and free of powder loss; Recommended: PTFE composite pad, quartz cloth, aramid pad;
Anti adhesive, used for heat sealing, composite film, lamination, etc. to prevent adhesion of work-pieces; Recommendation: PTFE and silicone surface treatment materials;
Anti slip positioning, avoiding work-piece slippage during hot pressing, with certain requirements for surface friction force; Recommendation: Cloth patterned silicone surface, coarse textured ceramic fiber surface;
Structural processability, customizable functions such as cutting, punching, slotting, and composite pasting; Recommended: aramid paper pad, silicone board, PTFE cloth pad;
When selecting, comprehensive consideration should be given to product size tolerances, tooling structures, cleanliness levels, and adhesion risks. Customized structural treatments can often significantly improve production efficiency and consistency.
Although small, high-temperature buffer pads play a key role in process safety, product protection, energy efficiency improvement, and equipment maintenance in high-temperature manufacturing. An excellent cushion design can not only improve the yield of finished products, but also reduce equipment wear and downtime costs. It is an invisible assistant that connects "process" and "efficiency".
In the selection process, temperature tolerance range is a prerequisite, pressure adaptation is the core, insulation is the guarantee, and functionality is a bonus. It is recommended that enterprises select professional suppliers for material testing, parameter validation, and sample testing based on their own application conditions, and establish a high-temperature buffering material system that matches the process.
